For some of us it comes quickly, and for others, it’s a work in progress. Motivation gets us out of bed in the morning, it inspires us to start projects, open businesses, create and much more. But what happens when those motivational moments are harder to come by? Sometimes we fall into a slump, and at that point, even the thought of making positive changes may seem like an uphill battle. But, don’t worry! Just as our bodies and thoughts change daily our lost motivation can be found once more. There’s not necessarily a secret motivational recipe that we can share, but we do want to bring your attention to the natural ebb and flow of motivation. It’s kind of like creativity, it comes and goes, and when it’s gone don’t worry, it’ll be back. In the meantime, here are a few tips for finding motivational moments in your daily life.
Take it one step at a time
If you are a go-getter that has five projects started right now, it might feel easier just to hide away and not make progress on any of them. You feel this way because you’ve taken on too much, and your energy and focus are compromised. When we lose focus the last thing we want to do is “get-up-and-go,” and trust us, this happens to everyone. When this situation occurs, it can be helpful to take a step back, prioritize and place your focus on what you need to complete immediately. Start there. And keep taking it step by step until your projects are complete.
Positive Vibes Only
This one speaks for itself, yet at times it’s easier said than done. When things are going great in your life, it may be easy to realize all you are grateful for, when there’s a bump in the road (and there always will be) that’s when the real work of keeping positive will happen. Taking a moment during the day to think about the things you are grateful for can combat negative thoughts. Speaking of negative thoughts and emotions, scientists say they can influence your brain, temporarily shutting down its ability to focus on anything else. When this happens, it can cause stressful situations to begin consuming you, your mind, emotions, and behavior.
Positive thoughts create positive results. Even if you feel that they are cheesy, motivational quotes, songs, books or movies can boost your mood and get you up off your bottom. They don’t even have to be considered “motivational,” your favorite music genre, book or activity can also increase happiness. Some of the most motivated individuals wake up with 20 minutes to spare each morning just so they can read, write or even meditate. Doing something for yourself, something that feeds your soul can lure your motivation right out of its hiding place.
We all need support, whether we want to admit it or not. Surrounding yourself with like-minded people can spark inspiration and so can engaging in open discussions with your family, friends, and community. Sometimes, their ideas, thoughts or presence can pull you out of a slump and encourage you. Taking a break from whatever you’re working on to speak with co-workers, family or friends can energize you and allow you to come back to the project with fresh eyes.
Managing Your Mood
This one sounds complicated, but it’s SO doable. If you’re thinking to yourself, “I just can’t be happy all the time” we hear you. So, how do you start the optimism train when you aren’t in the mood? Notice even the smallest amount of progress you’ve made and rejoice in it. The late American author, Carlos Castaneda once said “We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves happy. The amount of work is the same.” And it’s true. You can put all your energy and emotions into negative thoughts and actions, or you can fully engage yourself in positive ones.
Finding your motivation is critical to your success and overall happiness. Those who are motivated can achieve great things and help others in the process. Keeping yourself focused, staying positive, accepting support and managing your mood are steps in the right direction. And if you get off track, just pick yourself up and get back to it. We all stumble and fall, but it’s when we get back up that progress is made.
