Can Infrared Help with Cellulite Reduction?
It happens to the best of us, it’s annoying, almost unavoidable, it makes your skin look like an orange peel (cue horror movie music) What is it?! The dreaded cellulite… dun dun dunnnn. In all honesty, for some it’s not that bad. But, out of curiosity, we set out on a mission to find out why cellulite exists, what it is and if there’s a way to get rid of it… for good.
During our research, we discovered some very interesting and helpful information! For instance, cellulite and fat are not the same, it is possible to reduce its appearance and also, it tends to be more prevalent in women (what?!). Are you worried? Don’t be! A combination of infrared heat, healthy foods, exercise and topical products can help you break up with cellulite… because let’s face it, no one wants it around!
So, when you notice that things are starting to go “bump” on your thighs, keep these facts and tips in mind.
What is cellulite?
Cellulite is a gel-like substance that is made up of fat, water, and wastes trapped in pockets below the skin’s surface. The pockets of cellulite are often called globules and cellulite is so visible, in part due to weakened connective tissue and tight fascia. Fascia is a fibrous connective tissue that is fused to each vein, artery, bone and muscle. It’s present throughout the entire body and unhealthy fascia can cause body pain, the appearance of cellulite and more.
How can infrared heat help?
The body’s physiological response to infrared immersion often includes improved circulation, increased blood flow and sweat production. European beauty specialists and infrared experts, like Dr. Aaron Flickstein confirm that exposure to infrared heat can greatly advance an anti-cellulite program. Besides encouraging fats and toxins to leave the body, exposure to infrared saturation can also prompt the rebuilding of collagen connective tissue by having a positive effect on the fibroblasts (connective tissue cells producing collagen fibers). Stronger collagen may help rearrange the globules away from each other and the skin’s surface, leading to the prevention of further accumulation of cellulite. In addition, because you’re sweating and because of infrareds ability to penetrate deeply, it can help with the release of toxins through the skins sweat glands.
Why is it more common for a woman to have cellulite than a man?
First off, we don’t think this is fair! But, as you may know, men and women store fat differently in their bodies. As we have mentioned, cellulite is caused by changes in the skins environment and the fiber tissue walls that descend from the dermis (the layer of skin just below the surface) into the fat. The fiber tissue walls present in women’s bodies tend to form pockets while the fiber tissue walls that men possess typically do not. Why is this? Experts say that it’s because the fiber tissue walls in a woman’s body are typically in a crisscross pattern that acts like a tether to the skin. This allows fat below them tethers to bulge up between the fixed points, creating a “quilt-like” effect. The result of this is the skin puckering that we call cellulite.
In addition to the makeup of the female body, hormones play a vital role, as does the location of fat on the body. Men tend to accumulate fat around the midsection, unlike women whose fat deposits are mostly found in the buttocks, hips and thighs.
How do you make it disappear?
Now that we know what it is and where it comes from, let’s talk about cellulite treatments and a couple of ways to say “buh-bye” to our frenemy, cellulite.
Cardio and Aerobics: exercising regularly (if possible) can make a big difference. When you participate in cardiovascular or aerobic workouts your body can burn calories, reduce fat and boost circulation. This can help to disguise cellulite by increasing the muscle tone under the skin. Exercise has also been known to improve lymphatic drainage, which carries toxins out of the body. Those experiencing challenges with drainage may notice more cellulite, hence why we want to get things “moving” in the body. However, exercise alone may not solve the issue completely, which is why it can be helpful to fight cellulite from a few different angles.
Proper Nutrition: Nutritionists say that consuming healthy, low-fat foods is important when it comes to natural cellulite remedies. It can be an excellent (and yummy) idea to choose antioxidant rich foods such as Acai, berries and red or orange fruits and veggies. Antioxidants help protect against free radicals, which can lead to cellulite formation due to damaged skin cells.
Topical Products: Scrubs, sprays and creams can help when applied to the skin regularly.
